Hedgehog Care

Habitat

Cage: Hedgehogs need plenty of space. A recommended cage is at least 2’x2’. Personally we use large Rubbermaid storage bins for the ease of cleaning, light weight, and lower cost. They must have solid flooring since hedgehogs can easily break their limbs if they were to get stuck.

Shavings: There are many options for shavings. Cedar bedding is toxic for hedgehogs and should not be used. We have found that kiln-dried aspen bedding creates less dust and less dry skin for our hedgehogs.

Hiding Place: Hedgehogs like to feel protected and hide underneath objects. We recommend the use of igloos, blankets, tissue boxes, and/or over-sized cups.

Exercise: Hedgehogs need a wheel for exercise. The floor of the wheel should be solid so that their legs cannot get caught.

Food & Water Containers: There needs to be a container for both food and water. Small bowls work well. You may also use a water bottle. Make sure your hedgehog knows how to use it if you choose to use water bottles.

Temperature: It is necessary that the hedgehog’s environment stays at a consistent temperature between 75-80 degrees with little to no drafts. Do not let the temperature drop below 72, because it could be detrimental, especially for a young hoglet.

Food

Penny’s Prickly Pigs feeds our hedgehogs premium cat food (Purina ONE Cat food). It has been found to be nutritionally equal and cheaper than hedgehog brand food.

Be sure to weigh your hedgehog regularly to track any sudden increases or decreases. Hedgehogs are inclined to become obese if you let them.

Grooming

Regular nail clippings are important for maintaining hedgehog health. Keep an eye on the back toes especially as they can get too long and begin to curl.

Also, bathing every once in a while is important. Make sure you watch for dry skin and mites. If a hedgehog gets mites, you should take them to the vet and thoroughly clean the cage and replace the shavings immediately.

Socialization

It is important to socialize your hedgehog regularly. They need active attention every day. Socializing hedgehogs keep them friendly and domesticated.

Veterinary Care

If you have not already done so, keep a local veterinarian’s and an emergency vet’s phone number on record that treats exotic pets. Hedgehog central (www.hedgehogcentral.com) has a good list of vets that treat hedgehogs.

International Hedgehog Registry

Please register your hedgehog with the International Hedgehog Registry. Their website is: http://hedgehogregistry.org/register.html. This is important for record keeping and maintaining pedigrees. Also, if you are interested in breeding, a registry number is necessary.
